Is Work-Life balance for C-Suites an illusion?

Balancing your professional and personal life can be challenging, and often we prioritise work over everything else in our lives, including family, friends, and even health. Our desire to succeed professionally can push us to set aside our well-being. Creating the perfect work-life balance doesn’t only improve our physical, emotional and mental well-being, but it’s also essential for our careers.

Why is it hard for C-Suites to focus on personal time off?

Being a leader, people assume you know everything about running a business. Although this assumption can come from others, it’s a thought we have about ourselves and our roles more often than not. This self-imposed expectation makes it difficult for some C-suites to have a healthy work-life balance.

It’s become customary for many C-suites or executives to work over 8 hours a day, including holidays and weekends. This leaves little to no time for a well-developed personal life. Over weekends, you may feel the need to fit in all your other personal responsibilities or duties, which prevents you from truly relaxing. This phenomenon leads to a vicious cycle of stress. Even though dealing with uncertainty is often part of the role, it should never cost you your mental or physical health.

So how do we create a work-life balance?

1) Compartmentalising Your Life Is Necessary

Many believe that they need to split their time equally between work and home every day to have a healthy work-life balance. However, this is not always possible for everyone. Unexpected things arise both at work and home, and you might need to spend more hours than usual at work or stay home that day, depending on the situation. Your focus should be on spending the required amount of time on whatever your current priority is.

2) Achieving Balance Should Be Your Ultimate Goal

A perfect balance doesn’t always exist, and there will be times when your work-life affect your personal life and vice versa. Sometimes you may not completely switch off from work at the end of the day, especially as a C-level. Instead, a more achievable goal should be integration. Rather than keeping these parts separate, consider viewing them as interconnected components. When you’re happy in your personal life, you’re more likely to be energised and focused at work. And if you feel fulfilled at work, you’re more likely to be content in your personal life.

Change from the top

C-suite leaders have the opportunity to begin to affect a step-change in their organisations by leading by example and creating an environment where balance is an achievable and flexible working practice/policy is just flexible; for both the employer and the employee. We must remember that flexibility is not reserved for a particular group of people but all employees, irrespective of gender, seniority level or role.
